What to Check Before Buying Wheat in Bulk

Hands holding freshly harvested wheat grain over a sack

Moisture, cleanliness, packing and dispatch planning all affect what bulk wheat actually costs a business. Here is a practical checklist for buyers.

For flour mills, food manufacturers and traders, the price quoted per kilogram is only part of the picture. The condition the grain arrives in decides how much of it is usable, how it stores, and how much handling it needs before processing.

Moisture content

Grain that is dispatched with high moisture can heat and spoil in storage. Ask what moisture level the lot was stored at and how it has been kept since harvest, especially if the consignment will sit for several weeks before use.

Cleaning and foreign material

Straw, dust, stones and other grains reduce the effective quantity you receive. Confirm whether the wheat has been cleaned and to what extent, and agree how any deduction is handled before dispatch rather than after.

Packing and loading

Bag weight, bag type and whether loading is done at the farm or at a collection point all affect handling cost at your end. Settle these details in the quotation stage so the delivered cost is predictable.

Continuity of supply

If you need the same product month after month, say so at the first enquiry. Planning a repeat schedule is easier before a season than in the middle of one.
